Front End Engineer

At Propel, our mission is to build modern, respectful, and effective financial tools for low-income Americans. Over 2 million people use our first product, Fresh EBT, to manage government benefits on their EBT card, save money, and earn income. Read more about the impact of Fresh EBT here, here, and here. This year we are expanding further into the financial services space with the aim of building new products that help our users manage the other aspects of their financial lives.

We’re looking for a Front End Developer who wants to build excellent interfaces for Americans in financial need. The right person for this role is highly knowledgeable about modern web frameworks, having built and maintained something significant with React, Vue, or Angular. This person also must be highly passionate about working with product and design to create technology that is versatile, delightful, and functional.

Regardless of your background, the right person for this role understands that first-rate software emerges from a relentless focus on getting the details right. And, most importantly, the right person for this role shares our fundamental belief that Americans who are experiencing financial hardship deserve first-rate software.

Propel is a for-profit software company that holds its social mission at its core. Our investors include Andreessen Horowitz, the Omidyar Network, Kevin Durant, Serena Williams, and Nas.

What we offer:

  • Immediate opportunity to make an impact

  • A get-stuff-done and fun and caring culture

  • Meaningful work and a strong shared sense of mission

  • Competitive compensation (including equity) and excellent benefits

  • A dog-friendly office based in Downtown Brooklyn

What you will do:

  • Build an interface used by millions of Americans in their moments of financial need

  • Work with our design team to define and create a world-class user experience

  • Work with the rest of our engineering team to create scalable, maintainable, performant technology

  • Ensure that our technology works across a range of situations - low-end Android, limited data plans, etc

What you have:

  • 3+ years of front end development experience

  • Experience building something substantial with React, Vue, or Angular (our front end is written in VueJS, but we believe that talented developers can learn new technologies quickly)

  • Experience building consumer mobile products at scale, and dealing with the tradeoffs inherent in shipping products to large audiences

  • Experience with mobile design patterns and best practices

  • A bias towards writing clean, maintainable, well-crafted code

  • A passion for making a difference in the lives of our users

We are strongly committed to hiring a diverse and multicultural team, and encourage applications from traditionally under-represented backgrounds, including those with direct experience with the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program.

Full Stack Engineer

At Noom, we use scientifically proven methods to help our users create healthier lifestyles, and manage important conditions like Type-II Diabetes, Obesity, and Hypertension. Our Engineering team is at the forefront of this challenge, solving complex technical and UX problems on our mobile apps that center around habits, behavior, and lifestyle.

We are looking for a full-stack engineer to join our Web team and help build the tools that hundreds of human coaches use every day to help our users change their lives for the better.

What You’ll Like About Us

  • We work on problems that affect the lives of real people. Our users depend on us to make positive changes to their health and their lives.

  • We base our work on scientifically-proven, peer-reviewed methodologies that are designed by medical professionals

  • A respectful, diverse, and dynamic environment in which Engineering is a first-class citizen, and where you’ll be able to work on a variety of interesting problems that affect the lives of real people.

  • A generous budget for personal development expenses like training courses, conferences, and books.

  • Three weeks’ paid vacation, and a flexible work policy that is remote- and family-friendly. We worry about results, not time spent in seats.

  • Delicious (and nutritious) daily lunches and snacks prepared by Sam, our NYC office on-site chef.

What We’re Looking For:

  • 3+ years of experience designing and managing complex web-based applications, with a focus on picking the right tool for the job. We use Django and React, with MySQL and PostgreSQL as the backing data store, but we’re always on the lookout for technologies that can make our job easier.

  • An appreciation for the importance to strike a balance between getting code out quickly and following best practices. We move fast, but we like to build good software and manage risk carefully.

  • Excellent communicator: you’re comfortable explaining technical problems in person and in writing.

  • Team player: you enjoy teaching new concepts to, and collaborating with, the team.

  • Strong sense of responsibility and ownership; you will have come from an environment in which people are responsible for their own code.
