Senior Angular Engineer (Vancouver, BC, Canada)

new

Would you like to:

  • Love what you do and the people you’re doing it with?

  • Do the best work of your career?

  • Belong to an amazing and fun group who want to do - and are already doing - big things?

  • Be part of exciting work with a meaningful mission as we build and grow our products, our team, and ourselves together?

  • Know that your work is being used by - and benefitting! - literally millions of people?

At LimeSpot, the above is not an aspirational fantasy; it’s our reality! And we’d love you to consider being part of that reality with us.

LimeSpot is currently looking for someone to complement our expanding team of Senior Software Engineers, with a focus on front-end technologies. As 90% of our front-end code is currently in Angular, a solid level of knowledge/expertise in Angular is understandably a requirement for this role.

Tasks

  • Becoming an integral contributor to the frontend and user interfaces of all of our products, including some new ones

  • Being part of - and potentially driving/owning - some exciting big picture/big deal technical directions and organizational initiatives

Requirements

  • A good eye for user interfaces and delightful user experiences

  • Obsessive attention to details (20+ years)

  • SOLID (get it?) understanding of TypeScript and Reactive programming principles with rxjs (3+ years) and 6+ years of overall experience with web technologies

  • Experience with ngrx

  • Experience with Angular Material (2+ years)

  • Desire for the writing of testable code (we use Cypress)

  • Enjoyment of the company of other human beings from time to time

  • Loving Git or other modern source control paradigms (we use Git + GitHub)

  • Experience working in an Agile environment

  • Well organized and self-motivated

Some nice to haves (Seriously, they’re "nice to haves", not hard requirements! If you don’t have these, you will definitely have most of them by the time you conclude your run with us):

  • Knowledge of C# and Microsoft Web API - this is a front-end focused role; however, having the ability to go “full-stack” if needed is definitely a massive bonus

  • Familiarity with the “branch-per-feature” model of source control organization

  • Familiarity with microservices architectures and distributed systems

  • Previous e-commerce domain experience

  • An engaging smile

  • Familiarity with cloud-based services

  • Openness to spontaneous high-fiving (on Zoom!) or fist bumping as appropriate for candidate comfort level

Benefits

  • 100% remote culture

  • Fun and friendly startup culture, working with like-minded and talented people who will fast become your friends

  • The opportunity to be a meaningful contributor to our architecture and technical designs

  • Flexible Work Hours

  • Flexible Vacation and Paid Time Off

  • Competitive Salaries

  • Stock Option

  • Extended Medical Insurance (Dental, Vision, etc.)

  • Diverse Team

  • A very nice Vancouver Gastown transit-accessible office space with fantastic natural lighting

We welcome candidates throughout Canada. The current team is predominantly located on the west coast so while we’re open to candidates in multiple time zones and will honor their working hours, individuals in other time zones will be expected to periodically be available PT hours.

With customers on every continent (except Antarctica!), there's never been a more exciting time to join Shorthand. Our company has a rare distinction in this era of money-burning startups of being comfortably profitable. We're a small team of geeks with art and heart, and a high bar for quality.
To deliver our magic to customers and their audiences, we build software that is scalable, flexible, reliable and as simple as possible but no simpler.
We tend to do things a little differently at Shorthand. For one thing, we're a small, fully remote team distributed around the world. For this role, we'll happily take applications from anywhere in North or South America, but applicants must be fluent in English.
#The Role
This role will be primarily responsible for designing, engineering and supporting our customer integrations systems and services. You'll be glueing together our great storytelling product with our customers' content management systems and with our third-party providers like Google and Apple to create a seamless experience. Some integrations are backend API related (including Drupal/WordPress and other CMS module development), but most are focused on frontend JavaScript/TypeScript and Google AMP. A secondary but important aspect of the role is advancing Shorthand's automated testing coverage.
We are looking for someone who:

  • Is whip-smart, as demonstrated by career achievements and/or school/university results
  • Has great communication skills, particularly with respect to writing and interacting directly with technical and non-technical customers (sometimes across US and European timezones).
  • Has good knowledge of cloud-based web architectures, web crawlers, SEO, and frontend web performance optimisation.
  • Experienced in system design and system integration.
  • Has a wide range of experience and expertise across languages, frameworks and approaches such as JavaScript, TypeScript, and ReactJS, NodeJS, scripting, and serverless.
  • Is an expert in using git.
  • Has worked with CI/CD processes before (CircleCI/GitHub Actions preferably).
  • Is experienced using test automation tools (Cypress, Jest, React Testing Library, Percy preferably).
  • Is experienced with Drupal module and WordPress plugins development, especially in integration with third-party APIs.
  • Has an extremely high bar for quality.
  • Is thorough and detail-oriented.
  • Can learn fast.
  • Gains deep satisfaction from helping to make products better.
  • Has experience of working in a small business or startup environment.
  • Preferably has experience collaborating with diverse, geographically-dispersed teams.
    #Core Responsibilities:
  • Own customer integrations development including reusable third-party integrations (like WordPress plugins and Drupal modules) and JavaScript embedding solutions, publishing destinations (Google AMP, AWS S3, Akamai and others), as well as bespoke tailored customer-specific integrations.
  • Work directly with customers through the whole lifecycle of delivery.
  • Mature Shorthand automated testing capabilities to help improve product quality and team safety.
  • Provide high tier support especially for custom systems integrations.
  • Learn, evolve and improve an existing application/system architecture.
  • Review code from other engineers and provide feedback.
  • Help secure the environment.
  • Contribute to the technical direction of the Shorthand tool.
  • Report bugs.
  • Communicate with the customer support team and customers to suggest solutions to issues.
  • Assist in the creation of product documentation when required.
    #Qualifications:
  • A minimum of 5 years of experience in Software Engineering roles.
  • A minimum of 3 years of experience in web application development.
  • Thorough knowledge of NodeJS and the web.
  • Experience with AWS.
  • University qualification in computer science or a closely related field, or equivalent career experience required.
    #Personality Attributes:
  • You are a proactive self-starter, who does not need to be told what to do and will be resourceful in order to find solutions to any challenge.
  • You thrive in a fast-paced and demanding environment and possess a high level of intellectual curiosity.
  • You are collaborative.
  • You find fulfilment in the job itself, and happiness in a job well done.

Radical candor? More like radical gander, right?

Ok, enough goose puns for the moment, but now that we’ve got your attention, allow us to tell you more about this company called GooseChase and why might you want to join us!

You love an app that makes you smile, right? Well our product is a lot of fun. And even though our origins are that of a humble scavenger hunt app, we’ve now evolved (hatched?) into a super-flexible platform used by millions to create all sorts of experiences! It’s all the best parts of a scavenger hunt, with a delightful twist to keep you coming back for more.

With all that fun and flexibility, we’ve been growing like crazy. For teachers in the classroom, we’re the new “TV cart”, aka the learning tool that students legitimately look forward to. For today’s workplaces, virtual or otherwise, we help the team connect with each other to the point where they want to come into (or logon) to work. And for local cities and towns, we bring families together in a way that truly builds a sense of community.

But we’re also unique in that we don’t have any investors and, as a result, are able to put our people before profit. Seriously. We have a profit sharing program specifically for this reason! It also means we grow at the pace we want to and put the time into making this the best possible place to work. When we do something, it’s because it’s the best thing for our team and our customers, no matter what. We’ve actually been fully remote from the very beginning, because we wanted our people to have the flexibility to live wherever and however they wanted!

So what exactly is this job?

If you’re looking for impact & ownership, this is about as good as it gets. You’ll have the opportunity to take lead on our back-end tech stack going forward, charting our technical path, contributing to our product direction and helping shape the team as we grow!

From a day to day perspective, you’ll be a core member of our cross-functional product development team, focused on both the game organizer and participant experiences. Within our product team, there are no silos or artificial barriers, meaning you’ll be working closely with other engineers and designers! Whatever will help give our customers the best experience possible!

We recognize building the best products requires using the best tools, so we empower our engineers through access to the best tools and hardware available to remove barriers and enable fast iterating, robust code deployments.

In terms of technologies, you’ll be working closely with our front-end engineers as well as developing our API and async task system which:

  • Is currently based on Django / TastyPie / Celery, with plans to migrate to a Node.js-based architecture (that’s where you come in!)
  • Stores data in Postgresql, with images & videos in S3
  • Utilizes redis and memcached for caching, session storage, and async task result storage
  • Runs on Linode, switching over shortly to our new kubernetes-based cluster
  • Powers our mobile applications and web-based game manager

Looking at how we work, our methodologies are:

  • Continuous integration using CircleCI to empower developer autonomy and shorten development cycles
  • Agile, with two week sprint cycles
  • Daily async check-ins - stay connected to the team, but without zombie standups
  • Project management in Asana, with our “office” taking place on Slack & Zoom - we have a very strong gif game

How do you know if this might be for you?

At GooseChase you’ll be working alongside a team of highly motivated, world-class engineers with tons of opportunities for learning, growth, and mentorship. Our product team works closely together, so we are extremely selective about who we hire to ensure the calibre of our engineering talent remains high. Be prepared to bring your ‘A’ game!

We understand that relevant experience comes in all shapes and sizes and the ability to do the job is all that matters. With that in mind, we aren’t going to put together a generic list of all the requirements that we’re looking for with this job, however, there are certain things we are looking for - specifically:

  • Have you been able to collaborate & communicate successfully with others in a cross-functional team?
  • Do you have very high standards for your work and desire to work with other talented people?
  • Have you succeeded at architecting and implementing APIs that have been used by lots of people?
  • Are you passionate about full stack development and the web ecosystem?
  • Do you bring a depth of expertise in security and performance best practices?
  • Are you experienced in developing production-grade web systems that are performant and fault-tolerant at scale?
  • Are you based in the GMT-4 to GMT-8 time zones (North America), so you can work closely with our distributed product team?
  • Can you get down with an uncomfortable amount of goose puns?

Ok the last one isn’t super work related, but we honestly do have a lot of goose puns. It’s one of our favourite parts of our culture!

We do things differently here. We’re all about fun, but also making an impact. We care deeply about working with amazing people, and have set up our company culture specifically for that - our compensation is competitive, our work environment is autonomous and collaborative, and our emphasis is on learning and growth. Put simply, it’s the type of company we actually want to work at ourselves!

So, this is us, standing in front of you, asking you to join us.

We're building the Data Platform of the Future

Join us if you want to rethink the way organizations interact with data. We are a developer-first company, committed to building around open protocols and delivering the best experience possible for data consumers and publishers.

Splitgraph is a seed-stage, venture-funded startup hiring its initial team. The two co-founders are looking to grow the team to five or six people. This is an opportunity to make a big impact on an agile team while working closely with the
founders.

Splitgraph is a remote-first organization. The founders are based in the UK, and the company is incorporated in both USA and UK. Candidates are welcome to apply from any geography. We want to work with the most talented, thoughtful and productive engineers in the world.

Open Positions

Data Engineers welcome! The job titles have "Software Engineer" in them, but at Splitgraph there's a lot of overlap
between data and software engineering. We welcome candidates from all engineering backgrounds.

Senior Software Engineer - Backend (mainly Python)

Senior Software Engineer - Frontend (mainly TypeScript)

Apply to Job ← (same form for both positions)

What is Splitgraph?

## Open Source Toolkit

Our open-source product, sgr, is a tool for building, versioning and querying reproducible datasets. It's inspired by Docker and Git, so it feels familiar. And it's powered by PostgreSQL, so it works seamlessly with existing tools in the Postgres ecosystem. Use Splitgraph to package your data into self-contained
data images that you can share with other Splitgraph instances.

## Splitgraph Cloud

Splitgraph Cloud is a platform for data cataloging, integration and governance. The user can upload data, connect live databases, or "push" versioned snapshots to it. We give them a unified SQL interface to query that data, a catalog to discover and share it, and tools to build/push/pull it.

How We Work: What's our stack look like?

We prioritize developer experience and productivity. We resent repetition and inefficiency, and we never hesitate to automate the things that cause us friction. Here's a sampling of the languages and tools we work with:

Python for the backend. Our core open source tech is written in Python (with a bit of C to make it more interesting), as well as most of our backend code. The Python code powers everything from authentication routines to database migrations. We use the latest version and tools like pytest, mypy and Poetry to help us write quality software.

TypeScript for the web stack. We use TypeScript throughout our web stack. On the frontend we use React with next.js. For data fetching we use apollo-client with fully-typed GraphQL queries auto-generated by graphql-codegen based on the schema that Postgraphile creates by introspecting the database.

  • PostgreSQL for the database, because of course. Splitgraph is a company built around Postgres, so of course we are going to use it for our own database. In fact, we actually have three databases. We have auth-db for storing sensitive data, registry-db which acts as a Splitgraph peer so users can push Splitgraph images to it using sgr, and cloud-db where we store the schemata that Postgraphile uses to autogenerate the GraphQL server.

  • PL/pgSQL and PL/Python for stored procedures. We define a lot of core business logic directly in the database as stored procedures, which are ultimately exposed by Postgraphile as GraphQL endpoints. We find this to be a surprisingly productive way of developing, as it eliminates the need for manually maintaining an API layer between data and code. It presents challenges for testing and maintainability, but we've built tools to help with database migrations and rollbacks, and an end-to-end testing framework that exercises the database routines.

  • PostgREST for auto-generating a REST API for every repository. We use this excellent library (written in Haskell) to expose an OpenAPI-compatible REST API for every repository on Splitgraph (example).

Lua (luajit 5.x), C, and embedded Python for scripting PgBouncer. Our main product, the "data delivery network", is a single SQL endpoint where users can query any data on Splitgraph. Really it's a layer of PgBouncer instances orchestrating temporary Postgres databases and proxying queries to them, where we load and cache the data necessary to respond to a query. We've added scripting capabilities to enable things like query rewriting, column masking, authentication, ACL, orchestration, firewalling, etc.

Docker for packaging services. Our CI pipeline builds every commit into about a dozen different Docker images, one for each of our services. A production instance of Splitgraph can be running over 60 different containers (including replicas).

Makefile and docker-compose for development. We use a highly optimized Makefile and docker-compose so that developers can easily spin-up a stack that mimics production in every way, while keeping it easy to hot reload, run tests, or add new services or configuration.

Nomad for deployment and Terraform for provisioning. We use Nomad to manage deployments and background tasks. Along with Terraform, we're able to spin up a Splitgraph cluster on AWS, GCP, Scaleway or Azure in just a few minutes.

Airflow for job orchestration. We use it to run and monitor jobs that maintain our catalog of 40,000 public datasets, or ingest other public data into Splitgraph.

Grafana, Prometheus, ElasticSearch, and Kibana for monitoring and metrics. We believe it's important to self-host fundamental infrastructure like our monitoring stack. We use this to keep tabs on important metrics and the health of all Splitgraph deployments.

Mattermost for company chat. We think it's absolutely bonkers to pay a company like Slack to hold your company communication hostage. That's why we self-host an instance of Mattermost for our internal chat. And of course, we can deploy it and update it with Terraform.

Matomo for web analytics. We take privacy seriously, and we try to avoid including any third party scripts on our web pages (currently we include zero). We self-host our analytics because we don't want to share our user data with third parties.

Metabase and Splitgraph for BI and dogfooding. We use Metabase as a frontend to a Splitgraph instance that connects to Postgres (our internal databases), MySQL (Matomo's database), and ElasticSearch (where we store logs and DDN analytics). We use this as a chance to dogfood our software and produce fancy charts.

The occasional best-of-breed SaaS services for organization. As a privacy-conscious, independent-minded company, we try to avoid SaaS services as much as we can. But we still find ourselves unable to resist some of the better products out there. For organization we use tools like Zoom for video calls, Miro for brainstorming, Notion for documentation (you're on it!), Airtable for workflow management, PivotalTracker for ticketing, and GitLab for dev-ops and CI.

Other fun technologies including HAProxy, OpenResty, Varnish, and bash. We don't touch them much because they do their job well and rarely break.

Life at Splitgraph

We are a young company building the initial team. As an early contributor, you'll have a chance to shape our initial mission, growth and company values.

We think that remote work is the future, and that's why we're building a remote-first organization. We chat on Mattermost and have video calls on Zoom. We brainstorm with Miro and organize with Notion.

We try not to take ourselves too seriously, but we are goal-oriented with an ambitious mission.

We believe that as a small company, we can out-compete incumbents by thinking from first principles about how organizations interact with data. We are very competitive.

Benefits

  • Fully remote

  • Flexible working hours

  • Generous compensation and equity package

  • Opportunity to make high-impact contributions to an agile team

Frontend Software Engineer

We built Metabase because existing tools for business intelligence didn’t feel like things we wanted to use. We wanted faster, simpler ways to ask questions about data, and wanted to strip away the colder feel of most Enterprise software. Folks seemed to agree, and now Metabase is used daily by tens of thousands of companies to give people in all sorts of roles access to insights they wouldn’t have otherwise had. None of this could happen without our user interface and that’s where you come in. We’re looking for someone with strong product sensibilities, extraordinarily good frontend skills, and solid software engineering fundamentals to join our team to advance the state of the art in our product and our industry.

Why choose Metabase

  • The problems we face are genuinely interesting and aren’t trivial. Data influences so much of our world but isn’t that easy to interact with or understand. You’ll make tools that people rely on for their real jobs.
  • You’ll get to work in open source and get feedback directly from users and customers out in the open.
  • The company is growing and so is the business. We’re adding new remote team members from around the world and improving our processes. It’s an exciting time and you can really have an impact on how things work here.
  • We’ve tried to design our work environment to fit into real life. Work is only one part of who you are, so we emphasize reasonable workdays and prefer planning and avoiding panic. People at Metabase have families, dogs, plants, and lives outside of work and we try to support that however we can.</li>

What we’re looking for:

  • You care about crafting delightful user experiences. You like to write code to enable people to do something and you understand that details and things like copy matter. If your focus is only on code this might not be the best role for you.
  • Prior experience shipping non-trivial apps using React + Redux (or equivalent). Our front end is written in React (surprise!), so you’ll need really strong React and JavaScript knowledge to build fast and thoughtful user interfaces.
  • You have experience writing tests, giving good feedback on other people’s code, and writing proposals for more complicated problems that are thoughtful and clear. As we’re a remote company (even outside of pandemics) communication and clarity are really important.
  • Due to the nature of what we work on, computer science-y problems come up frequently. We’re not picky about a specific degree or accolade, but you’ll be expected to write fast and performant code and deal with a fair bit of data structure manipulation regularly.
  • We like everyone to care about the nuts and bolts of how to make things look good, so you’ll be expected to use our style guide and if necessary write or update our CSS, so comfort in CSS and familiarity with things like design systems and component libraries is a necessity.
  • You’ve worked on a large and complex JavaScript project. Metabase is a big product and code base so the ability to adapt existing code and integrate new code into established systems is important and you should feel comfortable digging in.

Not essential, but nice to have:

  • Knowledge and prior experience with data visualization (especially if it has involved dc.js and d3.js).
  • Previous contributions to open source (not a requirement, but a huge plus).
  • Either pre-existing knowledge or interest in learning some Clojure, the language much of the backend of our application is written in.

The types of problems you'd get to work on:

  • Lightning fast interaction with data. Think things like letting people see all the orders that came in from a specific region by clicking directly on a custom map of their sales regions and then letting them filter that list visually by directly interacting with the data table - and all of this happening in a responsive and delightful way.
  • Augmenting visualizations. To allow for people to further institutional knowledge, build the feature to allow annotations directly on specific data points in a line chart, and then determine how to expose those when it makes sense across dashboards and the entire app.
  • Wayfinding. We want to make sure people don’t have to do work that’s already been done, so build new ways to surface important metrics or segments to the right users across Metabase.
  • Embedded analytics. We have customers who deliver analytics to their own users via our embed product. You’d get to tackle the problem of making sure those can match their own products visually and enable easier integration of the embeds into their own code.

Rails React GraphQL Engineer Ready Ride The Rocketship (Denver, CO)

The world changed in 2020.

Companies across the globe had to figure out how to complete their workflows in a completely remote environment. For sales teams selling complex products, this was an especially difficult challenge due to the collaborative nature of high-performing sales teams.

Luckily, we at Demoflow had already been building a gamechanging platform to redefine the way remote teams sell together. We have created a live sales workspace paired with Zoom to provide an amazing environment and experience to all remote sales professionals and their customers.

We quickly raised a seed round investment from prominent VC firms and companies including the Slack Fund, and we've spent the last year hitting the market quickly. Accordingly, we are building an incredible team of high-performing individuals who are ready to build a category-defining platform for this new remote selling economy.

Our company culture is driven by a value-based framework where our clients’ success is ultimately our success. We foster employee growth and development, and always strive to promote from within. What do we expect in return? A partner who is willing to give it their all in our fast-moving, ever-evolving, recently funded startup.

You will ACTUALLY have a direct impact on the success of our company. The work you do today will help build the foundation of (y)our team in the near future. Also, we like hiking, motorcycles, skydiving, movies, memes, and much more. You don’t have to like those things too, but we encourage you to be interesting.

Senior Full Stack Engineer

As a senior Full Stack Engineer you will design, develop, and deploy large, integral parts of the application. We have a pipeline of features that span all areas of the tech stack, so you should be excited about the possibility of having a big impact on the product. Ideally, you have experience running development processes and/or managing development teams. That won't be required immediately, but would be a big nice-to-have as we scale.

The role is ideal for an engineer with strong attention to detail and a high bar for quality. Demoflow users run demos worth hundreds of thousands of dollars to their companies, so bugs and crashes in critical workflows are not acceptable. Accordingly, the engineer should have experience with test-driven development and modern testing tools. This engineer will not only have the opportunity to build new product features, but also have the opportunity to help build an engineering team and mentor newer engineers in the future.

Day in the life:

  • Architect, design, develop, and deploy features across the tech stack.

  • Monitor, edit, and scale our infrastructure

  • Write automated tests in all areas to ensure we can continue to iterate quickly

  • Evaluate third-party tools versus building features “in house”

  • Communicate daily progress with the rest of the engineering team

  • Interface with Sales and CS teams to ensure we are always working on the most important jobs each day

  • Present new ideas and respectfully debate those ideas with the team

  • Deliver and receive open, honest, and constructive feedback

Ideal Qualifications

  • 4+ years production experience with Rails and React

  • Experience with AWS infrastructure

  • Excellent communication skills

  • Electron

  • GraphQL

  • Jest

  • NodeJS

Additional Information

The most important requirement is that you are ready to be challenged, learn, and grow every single day. We are moving incredibly quickly as we build a category-defining product. We operate with transparent communication, honest feedback, and a growth mindset.

To demonstrate your attention to detail, please include your favorite book and author in the header of your cover letter. Some of our favorite books are “The Power of Now” by Eckhart Tolle and “The Infinite Game” by Simon Sinek.

Demoflow is an equal opportunity employer; we are focused on creating an inclusive environment and believe that diversity of all types is essential to our success. We encourage all to apply, and will choose you on the basis of qualifications and merit.

Tech Lead

About us

Our mission

Our company's mission is to enable people to trust each other at scale.

Problem we're solving

Social media is broken because users cannot easily move between platforms. Each platform is a silo; they have their own stacks, which are largely incompatible with each other.

Our Solution

An interoperable social stack. Layers instead of silos. Users can easily move between platforms without losing their followers.

What we're building

We are building the two bottom layers of that stack, i.e. a universal social graph and a decentralized ranking algorithm. We are also building the first UI for this new social stack – hive.one.

Work setup

We are a small, VC-funded startup. We are a remote-first team. Most of the team is based in Europe (Berlin, London, Milan). You can make your own hours, but everybody is expected to be online during office hours in CET. We try to meet in person and work together for several days at least every 3 months. Other than that the company ‘lives’ in Slack, Notion and other tools enabling effective communication.
The job is full time permanent. If you work from Germany, you will get an employment contract. Engineering works closely with our Product and Success teams to discover and deliver features that will make a real difference in a product our customers use every day.

Tech Stack
In 2019 we re-built our tech stack in a phased rewrite (rather than a big-bang project) to adopt React, Typescript, and Relay on the front-end, talking to a GraphQL API powered by Ruby on Rails. If there’s one thing that’s important to know about Culture it’s that we have a good culture.

For example:

  • We value kindness and empathy over intellect and strong opinions.
  • We don’t use the word “resource” to refer to people.
  • Imagine a typical bro-y startup… now imagine the opposite… that’s us

The Company

Culture Biosciences grows organisms for biotech companies. We've built the first cloud bioreactor facility. Here’s how it works:

  • Our customers, biotechnology companies, design organisms (bacteria, yeast, mammalian cells) to produce products (materials, therapeutics, food).
  • We grow their cells in our bioreactors to optimize the yield of their products. Ultimately, we help our customers get their products to market faster.
  • Our customers receive their experimental results live on our website.
  • Our cloud bioreactor facility is made possible by custom software and automation technology that our team develops. The automated infrastructure is also more efficient to operate than traditional equipment. Our software also provides quick and simple data analysis, enabling customers to analyze reams of data quickly.

The Role

We are looking for a frontend software engineer who wants to build the software platform that will transform biomanufacturing. You will collaborate with electrical, mechanical, biological, and chemical engineers to build our core technology. Your work will quickly impact cutting edge biotechnology companies by helping them get their products to market faster and more efficiently.

We have new and interesting software challenges. Our problems are more than scaling a web service: we model biological processes and operate mission-critical software within bioreactors that sometimes get wet.

You will work with our small, but growing, customer software team to design and build all aspects of our software for customers; from tools that allow our customers to turn around their experiments faster, to features that ensure the quality and safety of their experiments.

What you'll do:

  • Help define our software engineering culture
  • Proactively solve the problems most important to the business
  • Write high quality software for the frontend
  • Write high quality software for the backend as well when needed
  • Do code reviews
  • Learn about fermentation, bio-manufacturing, and biotechnology

In return, we will support you by:

  • Placing a high degree of trust in your ideas and execution
  • Bringing you up to speed in the domain of fermentation
  • Providing a low-stress work environment
  • Making ourselves available for collaboration
  • Caring about you as a whole person, not a “resource”

Projects on our horizon

  • Building the communication platform for bio-process planning and execution
  • Developing new data visualization and analysis tools for our customers
  • Expose complex bio-process protocol data in a simple understandable way
  • Provide live process controls (dangerous!) in a safe and intuitive way
  • And much, much more

About You:

  • You have at least six years of experience in frontend software development
  • You know your way around modern JS, React, and css
  • You’re proactive and enjoy thinking about the big picture
  • You’re kind, curious and enjoy learning new things
  • You’re product focused - you think about the perspectives of end users even when it might not be expected of you
  • You value communication and connection with a multidisciplinary team
  • You care that you’re building something that solves a problem and helps end users

Benefits include:

  • Competitive salary and equity compensation
  • Medical (PPO), Dental, Vision, and Life insurance
  • 401(k) plan with company match
  • 3 weeks of paid time off and 10 days of company holidays
  • 12 weeks of parental leave at full salary
  • Access to on-site child care facility, subject to availability
  • Free onsite breakfast, lunch, snacks, coffee, and gym (varies based on COVID-19 restrictions)
  • Support for relevant educational opportunities

Culture Biosciences provides equal employment opportunities to all employees and applicants. We seek to build a company that promotes inclusion and expands the diversity of our industry as a whole. We encourage people with identities underrepresented in biotech and technology to apply.

About SalonInteractive

SalonInteractive is a still-small but rapidly growing startup in the Health & Beauty eCommerce space. We provide an extremely easy way for salons to sell product online by linking them directly to distributors around the US. You could think of it as an out-of-the-box ready platform for dropshipping, but it's more complex in terms of both code and partnerships than that makes it sound. The complexity gives us interesting problems to work on in the near term, and makes the business defensible in the long term.

Our current goals can be summed up simply: provide a more modern, more beautiful, more streamlined experience for all of our partners, of which there are many. Salons, stylists, consumers, distributors, brands, us (SalonInteractive), and more. We are accomplishing this goal by redesigning and rearchitecting much our core application. It's an exciting time.

We want to deliver a product that is high quality inside and out. One that helps our partners capitalize on real opportunities, and gives us flexibility to meet the as-yet-unknown needs of the future. To this end, the engineering team works closely with stakeholders to combine their understanding of problems and opportunities with our understanding of engineering to craft effective solutions.

Your Day-to-day

This is a hands-on, fully-remote programming position. You'll be working on our Ruby on Rails based eCommerce platform backend, as well as the Tailwind/AlpineJS frontend. The core technologies you’ll be working with—and need to be familiar for success in this role—are Ruby, HTML, CSS, and JS.

We have a large number of high-impact projects planned for the platform. You'll work closely with the CTO, our existing development team, and other stakeholders both within the company and outside of it to understand needs and develop solutions. Your responsibilities will include designing, developing and deploying code to best serve our customers and partners.

As mentioned before, we have quite a bit of work planned for the next few months, so an ideal applicant will be ready to hit the ground running. Despite the amount of work we have, we strive to minimize context switching—if you’re on a project, you shouldn’t expect to be bombarded with unrelated tweaks on other projects here and there though—as with any company—it does happen to some extent.

We're a small but quickly growing post-revenue startup. As one of the early hires, there is opportunity for this to be a high impact position. An appropriately ambitious individual will have huge opportunity to lay the groundwork of the company's future.

Some Notes on Culture

Here are some of our values. They’re always being refined based on what works and what doesn’t.

  • We value clear, concise communication.
  • Ask questions. You can only produce high quality work if you have a clear understanding of the problem and the constraints.
  • Context—understanding our partners and their stakeholders—empowers individual contributors to find better solutions.
  • Free up time for interesting problems by automating repeatable tasks and learning your tools inside and out.
  • No process for process’ sake. No meetings for meetings’ sake. But we respect that there is a place for both.
  • Individual productivity is important, and hugely dependent on a minimally distracting, supportive environment.

  • Share ownership of the whole Powerpal system and take responsibility for ensuring that the projects you work on can be deployed, monitored, and maintained without friction.
  • Improve the quality of our existing codebases and expand our automated unit testing to include higher level end-to-end testing in multiple environments.

Our environment is very supportive, where proposals for change and suggestions for improvements are encouraged. In addition, we offer flexible working hours, an informal working environment with flat hierarchy, and competitive salaries.

Javascript C# Software Developer

Salad Technologies javascript c c plus plus c c plus plus

The Opportunity

Salad is at a key inflection point: we've successfully built a seed-stage product to connect users, their idle computers, and the ever growing demand for computer power. Now, we're ready to put fuel on the fire and scale Salad into the next big thing in computing. Our users trust Salad to turn their idle computers into rewards with the click of a button. Building and maintaining trust is core to everything we do. We reward our users with gift cards, subscriptions, games, and more. Today these idle computers support public blockchain networks, but we're quickly building a distributed infrastructure with our sights set on exascale computing.

We're looking for a software developer to help us build this future of computing. Reporting directly to the Director of Engineering, this role will have the opportunity to influence the design of key components and drive the implementation of major features.

We support some flexibility with work schedules, but we also work together as a tight-knit team. Collaboration and meetings necessitate a time zone between UTC-05:00 (Eastern Time Zone) and UTC-09:00 (Alaska Time Zone).

The Role

As an engineer on our cross-functional team, you'll work collaboratively with product managers, designers, fellow engineers, and support technicians to build high-impact features in our core and developing products. This role is highly technical, and you'll be a top code contributor. Your efforts will be focused on user interfaces, web-based applications, cross-platform desktop applications, APIs, microservices, data security, and third-party integrations.

The Tech Stack

Salad successfully shipped a MVP in less than 3 months using serverless infrastructure. As we grew, we hit the scaling and throughput limits of these services. We spent the last year building a rock solid, hyper-scalable application infrastructure all the while delivering the most requested new features.

Our open-source desktop and web-based applications are built in TypeScript on Electron, React and Node.js. Our APIs and services are built in C# powered by ASP.NET Core and Microsoft Orleans, a framework for robust, scalable, distributed applications.

We have a continuous delivery workflow that leverages Terraform and Docker to deploy our applications on AWS, Azure, Cloudflare, and Netlify. We love to automate all the things and deliver high-quality experiences to users all around the world.

The Skill Set

  • 5+ years of experience in software development.

  • Proficient with JavaScript, TypeScript, React, and Jest. Extra points if you've built an application with Electron.

  • Proficient with C# and ASP.NET Core. Extra points if you've used Microsoft Orleans.

  • Excellent technical and communication skills.

  • Experience with agile methodologies.

  • Work independently to follow through on assignments with minimal direction and take action when answers to a problem are not readily apparent in equivocal situations.

React Native Lead Developer

Bravely - Mental Health react reactnative javascript react native exec

If you’re an experienced React Native developer who is passionate about mental health, startups, and working remotely — we’ve got the job for you.

We don’t believe in being stuck in a boring 9-to-5; clocking in and clocking out. We believe that a job you love is a job worth doing. We work with purpose and meaning — for ourselves, and for our users.

Bravely is a small, young startup building a mental health solution that is desperately needed today (especially for 2020). We give people the ability to (a) track physiological factors that influence mental health, and (b) access evidence-based, therapy methods & psychology knowledge that is currently only found in dry, boring textbooks.

We’ll have fun, learn as we go, and build something we’re excited by. This is a chance to create something with the potential to help millions around the globe. We want someone we trust to join us in the driver’s seat, helping to steer Bravely towards its mission.

What working with us looks like:

  • We’re young, but ambitious — It’s still very early days for Bravely, but we know it’s the start of something epic. We know it’ll take hard work and learning to get there, but we’re absurdly passionate and stubbornly determined to build something that will help people around the world.
  • We’re always learning— Products never succeed in a silo. They’re only successes when they’re in the hands of people, and they don’t want to let go! We strive to always be learning; be it new research studies, constant user feedback, or a new design methodology.
  • We value teamwork & collaboration— They say Rome wasn’t built in a day, but it also wasn’t built alone. We work together, not apart in silos.
  • We value initiative —We’re not looking for mindless drones! The business is in everyone’s hands, not the select few. If you’ve opinions or feedback, we want to hear it.
  • We’re remote & flexible — We don’t believe in rigid work schedules or the old-school management method of watching your every move (rolls eyes). We don’t compromise on the things that matter (our values, our mission and our users), but we leave a lot of the rest up to you (your hours, your attire, etc.). The position is fully remote, so you have the flexibility to be wherever you need to be.
  • We value taking care of your mental health — It goes without saying that we value good mental health for everyone on the team. To quantify that: taking mental health days is not only allowed, but expected. Our flexible working policy means you’re free to schedule a therapy session for yourself in the middle of your work day, or arrange for your work day to fit around your needs.
  • We have fun too! — Work takes up way too much of your life to not have fun while working. We work hard, but we make sure we’re creating a healthy, friendly and fun work environment too. Team culture is something we never lose sight of.

What does the right person look like?

  • This is for the role of lead developer. You’ll be in charge of leading the development of the Bravely app together with designers and researchers.
  • You’ll have had prior experience building mobile apps with React Native. Any experience with leading the development of a product in a startup will be highly valuable. Any experience with psychology, therapy or mental health will also be helpful, but not necessary.
  • You should be responsible, proactive, and organised, with a personal belief in constantly improving and iterating. We want to explicitly state that you can be of any nationality, race, gender, sexual orientation or religion. The only requirement we have is for you to be open-minded and tolerant of anyone different to you. And if you’re the type to share funny video alongside thoughtful articles, we welcome you with open arms!
  • Bravely is fully bootstrapped. We’re on the lookout for someone to join us in the important lead developer role for SGD 5k / month. We aim to give vested stock options to our early founding members.

What skills and traits are we looking for?

  • A strong background of at least 3 years working with React Native. Experience with React on web would be ideal, but mobile is the definite priority.
  • Experience as a lead developer on digital products.
  • Someone who believes in user-research and design-led products.
  • Familiar with startup minded businesses — specifically with being lean, agile and to expect iterations with continuous user feedback.
  • Ability and ambitious to one day lead a development team.
  • Possession of a clear, organised workflow, who writes clean, well-maintained code.
  • An awesome attitude + no ego + team-player (no lone wolves).
  • Constantly learning and sharing knowledge + seeks out, appreciates and also returns feedback.
  • Experience with working remotely is ideal but not necessary.

Our Hiring Process

We’re glad you’re interested in working with us. We have a fairly unusual hiring process, but it has proven to work well both for us and for potential new hires. We have found that demonstrating basic competency is the best predictor of initial qualification for working with us, followed by actual work.

Our process reflects that: below, we outline our values and how we work, and then ask you to complete a small task. Assuming we like your response, we will hire you for a “paid interview” where you start working with us for a small number of hours each week. If both parties like working together, we expand the relationship. If not, we go our separate ways and both sides “won” in the deal!

If you have questions as you go through this, make notes and if we haven’t answered them by the end, feel free to email matthew.gossage@crometrics.com or brian.norman@crometrics.com.

Company Benefits

  • 100% remote, continue to work from where you are based

  • Professional gear (e.g. MacBook, monitor, and noise-canceling headset)
  • Annual All Hands trips
  • Paid Parental Leave
  • Liberal vacation policy
  • Access to group performance coaching sessions

Our Culture

Remote has always been our thing. We’ve been fully remote since 2010, so unlike companies that have been remote since March of 2020, we designed our company and culture behind the principles of high-performing remote teams. We’ve always believed remote is the future of work, and much like the experimentation we do, have iterated a lot along the way in a persistent effort to get it right.
We’re a remote company. We are spread out all over the country. Daytime availability is required for syncing with the team via Slack or Zoom, but Experiment Engineers enjoy all the flexibility remote working has to offer. Want to go on a mountain bike ride in the middle of the day? Cool, don’t forget your helmet! Need to pick the kids up from school? Nice, you’ve got parent of the year in the bag. We stay connected through both synchronous and asynchronous communications.
We value elegant code as much as you do, but we move fast. We’re writing code that runs on top of existing websites. Some tests only run for a few days before disappearing (though some do so well they become a permanent part of the client’s site). There will be polling patterns and liberal use of !important.
Again, we’re a remote company. That makes communication — including writing and reading comprehension — extremely important. This is not a simple “pull tickets and give sign off” gig. Successful applicants enjoy collaborating across teams, defining and clarifying needs, documenting processes, improving processes, and uploading custom emoji to Slack.

You can read more about our culture and values here or learn more about the team.

What We Do

Overleaf is a startup and social enterprise that builds modern collaborative authoring tools for scientists — like Google Docs for Science. We have over six million registered users from around the world. Our primary product is an online, real-time collaborative editor for papers, theses, technical reports and other documents written in the LaTeX markup language.

Who We Are

Overleaf was founded by two mathematicians who were inspired by their own experiences in academia to create a better solution for scientific collaboration and communication. Now we are a team of about forty with fifteen developers, based mainly in and around the UK and in the US. We were recently recognised as one of the UK's top 100 fastest growing businesses and as the Best SaaS for Nonprofits or Education in the 2020 SaaS Awards Program.

Our Tech

Overleaf is based on open source software, and most of our product code is itself open source. You can find it on GitHub: https://github.com/overleaf/overleaf (note: most activity is in the repos linked from there).

We run a mainly Node.js back end using MongoDB, PostgreSQL and Redis. We use a microservices architecture, with about a dozen services. On the front end, we mainly use Angular v1 and are incrementally migrating to React.

We're hosted on Google Cloud Platform using Google Kubernetes Engine. We use Docker to manage our development environments. We support continuous delivery and typically deploy at least a few times a day (less on Fridays).

How We Work

Overleaf is remote-first --- all founders and staff work remotely. We also have an office in Farringdon for those in the London area, and when the pandemic settles down we'll again get the whole team together in London a few times a year for face-to-face time.

We encourage flexible working. Our core hours are 2pm–5pm UK time, during which our development teams have 10–15 minute daily standup calls. We have few standing meetings for developers, but we do many smaller video or voice calls for pairing or within teams.

We always collect user feedback to inform our work. We have UX professionals on our team, and we run many surveys and user interviews.

We organize our work with Kanban. We use GitHub pull requests for each feature with code review to share knowledge and best practices (and catch bugs). We test thoroughly with automated unit and acceptance tests, supported by continuous integration (CI). We're also fans of linting to minimise bike-shedding (and to catch bugs).

About This Role

We plan to add two developers to our team, both with a backend focus. Experience with some of Node.js, MongoDB, PostgreSQL, Redis or Kubernetes is desirable. We are also particularly interested in meeting you if:

  • you'd be interested in taking up a team lead role in the not too distant future, or
  • you have experience with setting up data pipelines for web analytics and/or business intelligence.

Key projects on our road map this year include:

  • Improve our B2C conversion metrics and monitoring — we'll be setting up a new web analytics system to generate insights we need while continuing to respect user privacy
  • Consolidate our two project history systems — we currently have two from our integration with ShareLaTeX in 2017, each with hundreds of TB to be consolidated
  • Make our project PDF preview faster and less bandwidth hungry — we have prototypes showing big wins that now need productionizing

Here are some examples of projects (large and small) we've recently completed:

In the longer term, we are planning projects around improved collaboration features for teams, improvements to our rich text mode, and more.

How We Hire

The stages in our hiring process are typically:

  1. We will aim to update you on the status of your application within 14 days from when we receive it.

  2. We'll follow up by email (or sometimes schedule a phone call) with any questions we have about your application, usually around logistics, your ambitions and your expectations about the role.

  3. We'll schedule a more in-depth interview, which is typically two hours long. The first hour is discussion, and the second hour is technical. For the technical, you'll have the option of either completing a homework assignment, which requires about one hour of your time before the interview, or solving a problem in the interview, if you prefer. The problems are practical in nature (no fizz-buzz or reversing linked lists), and you can use Google, man pages, etc., and ask us questions.

  4. We'll make an offer. We usually interview in batches, so there may be a short delay while we interview other candidates, but we will try to keep you informed throughout the process.

If you have a deadline, please let us know in your application, and we will try to be accommodating.

Requirements

We require that you:

  • have a minimum of 2–3 years of relevant experience (we aren't taking on more new graduates at the moment).
  • will work for us full time (or nearly full time).
  • will usually be available in our core hours, 2pm–5pm UK time.

Applicants in the UK, Europe, US and Canada are preferred.

Experience with the technologies we use is always a plus, but you don't need to know them all; your ability to learn is much more important to us.

Benefits

  • Remote and flexible working.
  • Salary £40k–£75k per year depending on experience.
  • You would join a small, dedicated and growing team.
  • We're substantially (around 80%) open source, so your work will often be on open source code.
  • We're backed by Bethnal Green Ventures (https://bethnalgreenventures.com/) and Digital Science (https://www.digital-science.com/), through which we're part of a wider community of startups in science, health and ed-tech.
  • Our London office is shared with several other Digital Science companies, so there's lots of interesting people to meet, and clubs and sports activities outside of work.
  • We get everyone together in London for team meetings several times a year for valuable face-to-face time (pandemic permitting).
  • You can pick your own equipment. MacBook Pro? Lenovo ThinkPad? Notebook and pen? However you like to work, we'll provide what you need.
  • We provide a training budget; many of our developers choose to attend relevant industry conferences or buy training materials.
  • We run quarterly remote hackathons to keep learning and experimenting.
  • We run a weekly internal seminar series with short talks from staff about their work or personal projects, new technologies and techniques.

We are an equal opportunity employer and value diversity at our company. We do not discriminate on the basis of race, religion, color, national origin, gender, sexual orientation, age, marital status, veteran status, or disability status.

vidIQ’s mission is to advance the creator's journey with actionable data-driven insights. We pursue this through our values of being creator obsessed, lean and fast, and being scientific. We have already helped millions of creators, and we are looking for stunning co-workers to join us in helping millions more.

So Why Join Us?

Our work is exciting as we are transforming the creator analytics space. This has provided many of us the opportunity to work on new and exciting projects. Equally, we’ve set up our people for success by giving them professional development opportunities like courses or conferences that will help them acquire desirable skills/experience.

Our company has met the future of work head on, with a fully remote company, capable of giving you flexibility to balance work and life. When it’s time to go on a break, we have an unlimited vacation policy so you can recharge. Lastly, we celebrate our wins and try to enjoy work by going on fun retreats to exciting destinations, such as Spain, Portugal and amazing places to come.

We are committed to diversity and inclusion . We work hard to enable creators of all kinds to succeed and, to that end, we prioritize diverse talent and an inclusive environment that encourages collaboration and creativity. We’re committed to building a company and a community where people thrive by being themselves and are inspired to do their best work every day.

What you will be doing

As part of our growing Frontend Team, you’ll work with team members at all levels to improve our existing products and develop new ones.

The tools we use most heavily right now are React and JavaScript, though we still have Backbone and Flux in some of our codebases as well. We use Asana for project management, GitHub for code reviews, and Slack for daily communication. We also have a Rails API and consider it a major bonus if you have experience working on Rails applications.

Some projects you may work on include:

  • Research and implement architectural changes such as migrating our browser extension to Redux.
  • Help measure the effectiveness of certain features by building a reusable analytics module to use across our products.
  • Improve our brand and usability by reskinning components according to our new design system.
  • Make our products more reliable by writing integration tests to cover common user workflows.
  • Simplify our API interactions by building a GraphQL layer.
  • Level up the team by reviewing code and suggesting improvements.

Over time, you’ll become an owner of some areas of our codebase and have the freedom to improve them as you see fit.

Who you are

  • A builder - Frontend development is full of helpful tools, libraries, and patterns, and you enjoy using these to build products people will love. You like new challenges and strive to ship new features to customers on a regular basis.
  • Life long learner - You enjoy keeping up with the latest trends in frontend space. If a project uses a framework that’s new to you, you dive into the docs and tutorials to figure it out.
  • Have an owner mentality - When bugs appear, you document and fix them. When projects are too complex, you work with others to refine the scope until it’s something you believe can be built in a reasonable amount of time and maintained in the long run.
  • Care about code quality - You believe simple is better and strive to write code that is easy to read and maintain. You consider edge cases and write tests to handle them. When you come across legacy code that is difficult to understand, you add comments or refactor it to make it easier for the next person.
  • Balancing Act - Great products must balance performance, customer value, code quality, dependencies, and so on. You know how to consider all of these concerns while keeping your focus on shipping things.
  • The great communicator - If a project is off-track, you bring it up proactively and suggest ways to simplify and get things going. You proactively share status updates without being asked and strive to keep things as honest and transparent as possible.
