Our Hiring Process

We’re glad you’re interested in working with us. We have a fairly unusual hiring process, but it has proven to work well both for us and for potential new hires. We have found that demonstrating basic competency is the best predictor of initial qualification for working with us, followed by actual work.

Our process reflects that: below, we outline our values and how we work, and then ask you to complete a small task. Assuming we like your response, we will hire you for a “paid interview” where you start working with us for a small number of hours each week. If both parties like working together, we expand the relationship. If not, we go our separate ways and both sides “won” in the deal!

If you have questions as you go through this, make notes and if we haven’t answered them by the end, feel free to email matthew.gossage@crometrics.com or brian.norman@crometrics.com.

Company Benefits

  • 100% remote, continue to work from where you are based
  • Health insurance reimbursement allowance

  • Annual All Hands trips
  • Paid Parental Leave
  • Liberal vacation policy

Our Culture

Remote has always been our thing. We’ve been fully remote since 2010, so unlike companies that have been remote since March of 2020, we designed our company and culture behind the principles of high-performing remote teams. We’ve always believed remote is the future of work, and much like the experimentation we do, have iterated a lot along the way in a persistent effort to get it right.
We’re a remote company. We are spread out all over the country. Daytime availability is required for syncing with the team via Slack or Zoom, but Experiment Engineers enjoy all the flexibility remote working has to offer. Want to go on a mountain bike ride in the middle of the day? Cool, don’t forget your helmet! Need to pick the kids up from school? Nice, you’ve got parent of the year in the bag. We stay connected through both synchronous and asynchronous communications.
We value elegant code as much as you do, but we move fast. We’re writing code that runs on top of existing websites. Some tests only run for a few days before disappearing (though some do so well they become a permanent part of the client’s site). There will be polling patterns and liberal use of !important.
Again, we’re a remote company. That makes communication — including writing and reading comprehension — extremely important. This is not a simple “pull tickets and give sign off” gig. Successful applicants enjoy collaborating across teams, defining and clarifying needs, documenting processes, improving processes, and uploading custom emoji to Slack.

You can read more about our culture and values here or learn more about the team.

We’re continually working together to create mutual respect and opportunities to learn from one another and we encourage people of color, women, individuals with disabilities, and LGBTQIA+ individuals to apply.

We have already helped millions of creators, and we are looking for stunning co-workers to join us in helping millions more.

So Why Join Us?

Our work is exciting as we are transforming the creator analytics space. This has provided many of us the opportunity to work on new and exciting projects. Equally, we’ve set up our people for success by giving them professional development opportunities like courses or conferences that will help them acquire desirable skills/experience.

Our company has met the future of work head on, with a fully remote company, capable of giving you flexibility to balance work and life. When it’s time to go on a break, we have an unlimited vacation policy so you can recharge. Lastly, we celebrate our wins and try to enjoy work by going on fun retreats to exciting destinations, such as Spain, Portugal and amazing places to come.

We are committed to diversity and inclusion . We work hard to enable creators of all kinds to succeed and, to that end, we prioritize diverse talent and an inclusive environment that encourages collaboration and creativity. We’re committed to building a company and a community where people thrive by being themselves and are inspired to do their best work every day.

What you will be doing

As part of our growing Frontend Team, you’ll work with team members at all levels to improve our existing products and develop new ones.

The tools we use most heavily right now are React and JavaScript, though we still have Backbone and Flux in some of our codebases as well. We use Asana for project management, GitHub for code reviews, and Slack for daily communication. We also have a Rails API and consider it a major bonus if you have experience working on Rails applications.

Some projects you may work on include:

  • Research and implement architectural changes such as migrating our browser extension to Redux.
  • Help measure the effectiveness of certain features by building a reusable analytics module to use across our products.
  • Improve our brand and usability by reskinning components according to our new design system.
  • Make our products more reliable by writing integration tests to cover common user workflows.
  • Simplify our API interactions by building a GraphQL layer.
  • Level up the team by reviewing code and suggesting improvements.

Over time, you’ll become an owner of some areas of our codebase and have the freedom to improve them as you see fit.

Who you are

  • A builder - Frontend development is full of helpful tools, libraries, and patterns, and you enjoy using these to build products people will love. You like new challenges and strive to ship new features to customers on a regular basis.
  • Life long learner - You enjoy keeping up with the latest trends in frontend space. If a project uses a framework that’s new to you, you dive into the docs and tutorials to figure it out.
  • Have an owner mentality - When bugs appear, you document and fix them. When projects are too complex, you work with others to refine the scope until it’s something you believe can be built in a reasonable amount of time and maintained in the long run.
  • Care about code quality - You believe simple is better and strive to write code that is easy to read and maintain. You consider edge cases and write tests to handle them. When you come across legacy code that is difficult to understand, you add comments or refactor it to make it easier for the next person.
  • Balancing Act - Great products must balance performance, customer value, code quality, dependencies, and so on. You know how to consider all of these concerns while keeping your focus on shipping things.
  • The great communicator - If a project is off-track, you bring it up proactively and suggest ways to simplify and get things going. You proactively share status updates without being asked and strive to keep things as honest and transparent as possible.

You'll be joining a lean engineering team working to build a consumer facing app at the intersection of culture and fintech, poised to scale in the coming year.

Note that we are open to a range of commitment levels (full-time, part-time, and contract work) and are happy to work with team members to find the best work structure for their lives.

A great culture provides the context for people to deliver their best work. Our goal is to find the fastest way to win. Otis is an equal opportunity employer. We are committed to building a culture where diverse thoughts are welcomed and rewarded.

We want our staff to have a stake in the business. If the team has skin in the game, we’re more likely to win. If you are happy to take a slightly lower salary to obtain more shares/options or even invest, that is great but not essential.

The Power of Community
Shared experience is central to our games and a key part of enjoying work. We want to make Network Gaming an enjoyable and rewarding place to work and believe it's always more fun to do things together.

Compassion and Wisdom
In a decentralised business, our people must be knowledgeable and display sound judgement. We also look for people who can understand and empathise with others, and selflessly help other team members in need. These two qualities combined are powerful community builders.

We are GAMEDOGS
From ‘Hide & Seek’ to Monopoly, Minecraft to marbles, e-Fifa to football, we love the game. We dedicate time to improving at whatever we play, take care to understand the inner workings of each game and strategise on how we can win.

Our projects are generally focused around making large, material changes to our clients’ sites or designing and developing new sites from the ground up. You'll work closely with client stakeholders, our project managers, and our other developers to design, develop and deploy features and updates that best serve our clients and their customers.

We have quite a bit of work booked for the next few months, so an ideal applicant will be ready to hit the ground running. Despite the amount of work we have, I strive to minimize context switching—if you’re on a project, you shouldn’t expect to be bombarded with unrelated tweaks on other projects here and there.

We're a small but quickly growing agency. As one of the early hires, there is opportunity for this to be a high impact position. An appropriately ambitious individual will have huge opportunity to lay the groundwork of the company's future.

Technical Responsibilities

When you start, this is what you can expect to work on.

  • Full Magento, Shopify, or WooCommerce site development

  • Implement designs in CSS/HTML/JS
  • Configure Magento-related middleware services, Redis, Memcached, Varnish, Solr, etc.

  • Git experience
  • Understand the web—REST, HTTP verbs, basic HTTP status codes, etc.

If you fulfill the above and have experience with a few of the below, definitely get in touch.

  • Hands-on programming experience with all three of the core eCommerce platforms we support
  • Enterprise software development
  • Strong UX/UI chops
  • Deep understanding building complex database queries, particularly MySQL
  • Experience setting up and configuring Apache
  • Opinionated about design—visual and code

Senior UI Front End Developer

Interaction Design Foundation javascript css front end design senior css

Do you want to use your coding skills to improve the lives of millions of people? Are you brave enough to let millions of UX designers use your code? Are you obsessive about your own professional development and continuous learning-through-doing? Then read on!

The Interaction Design Foundation is the biggest online design school globally. Founded in 2002, we have over 90,000 graduates and counting. We're market leaders in online design education because the world’s leading experts create our content and because we're specialized in design. What’s more, with over 1.5 million monthly visitors, we’re at the forefront of providing premier design education to such organizations as IBM and SAP, as well as thousands of other companies. Our ever-growing community now needs a first-class front-end developer to help craft the ultimate user experience.

This is where your passion for UX and hard-science coding skills merge: Every time your code is executed, you help improve the life of a human being. And not only that, those members will likely go on to design better products and services to the benefit of all humankind.

Our front-end code is a vital part of our winning formula: Our codebase is our baby and it can never become too perfect. You will, therefore, become an essential part of our long-term success, someone who is making a direct impact on not only the growth and reputation of our foundation but also the whole world of design education and beyond!

This is a paid full-time position which is location independent: You’re free to work from wherever you want in the world. You will have regular video-based contact with your colleagues and get to meet them physically on team trips.

What you will be doing

You will join our team as our Senior UI/Front-End Developer and your main responsibilities will be to:

  • Write reusable components using the Laravel Blade template engine, CSS and presentational JavaScript.
  • Help improve our Design System at https://design-system.interaction-design.org
  • Maintain our PostCSS code base to keep and improve reusability and DX and deliver less CSS to the end user.
  • Improve CSS architecture and guidelines, make principal technical decisions in the UI area.
  • Help us use animations more widely, e.g. with Lottie animations.
  • Automate regression testing and front end code quality checks.
  • Improve the accessibility and performance of our pages.
  • Work with our design team to improve UX on different stages of the design process.
  • Work on PWA for our course platform as a part of the front-end team (offline support, better mobile experience, etc.)
  • Help yourself, and the whole team, get better and better. For example, by improving our handbook at https://handbook.interaction-design.org. Or use our library of evergreen literature on back-end and front-end subjects to broaden your horizon.

You and our future-proof stack

Forget IE and clunky workarounds for compatibility with other dinosaur browsers: We spend our time only on modern Web APIs since we only support evergreen browsers.

We’re constantly refactoring our front-end code with the goal of reaching front-end heaven. We seek a balance between sticking with what works and fearlessly exploring the new:

  • Laravel Blade template engine (yup, we build our HTML on the server-side).
  • PostCSS to maximize the power of modern CSS.
  • Webpack for perfect control over front-end assets.
  • Latest JS with support for ES2020 features. To accomplish this we use the latest Babel releases.
  • BEM/ITCSS in combination with Tailwind CSS based utility classes.
  • A custom-made design system to achieve consistency and ease of use.

We ❤ CI (Continuous Integration) and CD (Continuous Delivery) so we usually deploy a few releases per day: Zero downtime. Just a few buttons to push. No sweaty palms.

We care deeply about Developer Experience (DX) of our codebase and tools. DX and DevOps is our middle name: git, GitHub, HTTP2, CDN, AWS, Enterprise SSDs on our high-spec servers and much more.

About you

  • You have at least 5 years of experience working as a Front-End Developer.
  • You prefer native web APIs and functionality over alluring new frameworks - and you know how and when to use them.
  • You regularly use WHATWG and W3C and you are intimately familiar with the latest web standards.
  • You can create your own intelligent, reusable CSS layout system.
  • You test across devices and browsers, and optimize for performance.
  • You write testable code.
  • You love to learn through doing. You’re always ready to put in some hard work to expand your skills.
  • You speak and write acceptable English – not perfect English, just acceptable – since you will be working with people from Canada, England, Denmark, the US, Belarus and Brazil among others.
  • You are a team player and you don't bring your ego to work.
  • You are self-motivated and self-disciplined and thus work well in a flat hierarchy with lots of freedom.
  • You love to have creative freedom, make independent judgments and live up to the responsibility that comes with that freedom.
  • You love to create tangible results—every hour and every day.

You get bonus points…

Senior Frontend Engineer

We, at Octopods (https://octopods.io), are a small, sharp-focused and deliberate team. We built Octopods to connect businesses using live chat software (like Intercom) to the most popular messaging channels out there (like WhatsApp, Twitter, Facebook, etc). We started small, and we want to keep staying small, bootstrapped, and very profitable. But we do dream big, and we have plenty of big plans. We want to tackle our next set of exciting challenges in the next years to come and this is where YOU come in the picture, we want your help for us to do so.

About the role,

We are looking to hire a Senior Frontend Engineer to join our small distributed team around different parts of Ireland, Canada and other spots around the world. Ideally, we are looking for a frontend generalist, someone who can wear many hats, someone who is pragmatic, and most importantly, who thinks from first principles (https://fs.blog/2018/04/first-principles). We work remotely, and so this is a 100% remote role. You can choose to work anywhere you'd like having at least 6 hours overlapping with GMT+0.

Here are few pieces of work you will have a chance to work on,

  • Lead our frontend engineering efforts and set the bar for our Senior Frontend Engineer.

  • Architecting our monolithic frontend for our new upcoming suite of products.

  • Building omnichannel conversational experiences for businesses to communicate with their customers.

  • Building a chatbot designer or editor from scratch to support major business messaging channels.

  • Founding a design system for our suite of new upcoming products.

  • Building or choosing a UI Kit and wrap it up with framework components.

  • Collaborating tightly with our Product Designer to solve complex design problems, empathetically.

  • And a few more equally exciting and challenging projects!

About you,

A little bit about what we think can be a good fit for us,

  • You worked with Javascript, and would probably put an argument choosing Typescript over it.

  • You worked extensively with Vue.js or React.js in the last 4 years & above.
