Senior Software Engineer (Frontend), Imaging, Science

Chan Zuckerberg Initiative in Redwood City, CA 23 mi python reactjs r imaging

Founded by Priscilla Chan and Mark Zuckerberg in 2015, the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative (CZI) is a new kind of philanthropy that’s leveraging technology to help solve some of the world’s toughest challenges – from eradicating disease, to improving education, to reforming the criminal justice system. Our mission is to create a future for everyone. Across our three core Initiative focus areas of Science, Education and Justice and Opportunity, we’re pairing engineering with grantmaking, impact investing, policy work, and movement building, to help build an inclusive, just and healthy future for everyone.

**Our Values **

We believe we can help build a future for everyone.

  • We aim to be daring, but humble: We look for bold ideas — regardless of structure and stage — and help them scale by pairing engineers with subject matter experts to build tools that accelerate the pace of social progress.

  • We want to learn fast, but build for the long-term: We want to iterate fast and help bring new solutions to the table, but we also realize that important breakthroughs often take decades, or even centuries.

  • Stay close to the real problems: We engage directly in the communities we serve because no one understands our society’s challenges like those who live them every day.

Our success is dependent on building teams that include people from different backgrounds and experiences who can challenge each other's assumptions with fresh perspectives. To that end, we look for a diverse pool of applicants including those from historically marginalized groups — women, people with disabilities, people of color, formerly incarcerated people, people who are lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and/or gender nonconforming, first and second generation immigrants, veterans, and people from different socioeconomic backgrounds.

The Opportunity

By pairing engineers with leaders in our education, science, and justice and opportunity teams, we can bring technology to the table in new ways to help drive solutions. We are uniquely positioned to design, build, and scale software systems to help educators, scientists, and policy experts better address the myriad challenges they face.

In our Science Initiative, our mission is to support science and technology that will help make it possible to cure, prevent, or manage all diseases by the end of the century. Interdisciplinary teams of physicians, biologists, computational scientists, and engineers can expand our understanding of the human body and illness — the very science behind medicine. CZI fosters collaboration between scientists and engineers, develops tools and technologies, and builds support for basic scientific research.

Some Science Initiative example projects include:

  • napari - an open-source interactive, multi-dimensional image viewer for python

  • IDseq - a metagenomics platform focused on delivering insights in infectious disease

  • Starfish - an open-source image processing framework, enabling access to multiplex image-based transcriptomics analysis

  • cellxgene - an open-source interactive data explorer for single-cell transcriptomics data

  • Meta, a semantic discovery tool that provides a faster way to understand, organize and explore science through personalized feeds

As a Senior Software Engineer in the Imaging Program, you will build software tools to support our mission, focused on enabling researchers to gain a much deeper mechanistic understanding of biological systems. Those software tools will help researchers to visualize life’s processes at the necessary biological scales (systems, tissues, cells, proteins) and in the necessary context (e.g. protein interaction in cells, cell signaling in the living system), enable measurement and quantitative insights, and make and build on each other’s discoveries.

You will have the opportunity to work closely with a collaborative team of scientists, engineers, product managers, designers and user researchers, building software that accelerates the pace of the biological sciences. This is an excellent opportunity for a person with extraordinary engineering skills and an interest in open source software and science.

You will

  • Build analysis and visualization tools for exploring and analyzing biological imaging data

  • Collaborate on open source software projects with the opportunity to contribute to major existing essential open source projects

  • Work in a multi-disciplinary team, with engineers, scientists, product managers, designers and user researchers, to define product plans and strategy

You have

You have diverse and robust software engineering skills, an interest in biology and the CZI mission and a desire to build user-centered solutions.

  • 5+ years of software design, development and delivery for both desktop and web applications

  • 3+ years using relevant technologies including Python, front-end web, cloud and other related technologies

  • Experience building Python GUI applications using PyQt/Qt or similar frameworks

  • Experience building front-end web applications using Javascript frameworks like React or Angular

  • Familiar with the scientific Python ecosystem (SciPy) and working on open source projects a plus

  • Demonstrated ability to learn and use new methods and tools, define project requirements and ship completed projects

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills

Senior Software Engineer, Full Stack

At Qualia, we are fundamentally transforming the way real estate professionals, lenders, and homebuyers manage real estate transactions, one of the nation’s largest industries. We are bringing together everyone involved in the closing process onto one shared, secure platform -- basically, we’re making buying a home in America easier, safer, cheaper, and less painful by moving the process online! Qualia was founded in 2015 by Forbes 30 Under 30 Award recipients Nate Baker, Joel Gottsegen and Lucas Hansen. The company is backed by top investors including 8VC, Bienville Capital, Menlo Ventures and Tiger Global and currently processes 20% of all US real estate transactions. Qualia is headquartered in San Francisco, CA and has offices in Austin, TX. Qualia was also named by CB Insights and Fast Company in their “50 Future Unicorns” spotlight for 2020.

We are hiring entrepreneurial engineers interested in being a part of our scaling engineering team. Our engineers are conscientious hackers who like teamwork but are also comfortable with independent projects. Our engineering team releases new software every week, moves at a fast pace, and works directly with our design and customer-facing teams to imagine and build the new experiences our customers love. Because of that, you’ll get a rewarding variety of projects to work on.

As a Senior Software Engineer, you've been in the industry for a while and have a proven track record of success. You are comfortable taking full responsibility for complex, high-liability projects. You have experience making key architectural decisions and performing the research to back up those decisions. You've dealt with the consequences of your mistakes, and know how to fight fires if necessary. You enjoy mentoring and providing support for less experienced developers. You've thrived in many different environments and realize that each team is unique.

YOUR DAY TO DAY

  • Your work will focus on building web technologies, both frontend and backend. You’ll work on improving and extending our core web applications, diverse software integrations, payment-processing systems, and other exciting new features.

  • Our engineers are generalists, and your responsibilities will be flexible based on company needs as well as your skills and interests.

YOUR BACKGROUND THAT LIKELY MAKES YOU A MATCH

  • We are looking for strong full-stack engineers with 5+ years of experience

  • We value engineers who have good product sense, attention to detail, and passion for the impact of the software they build.

  • You have made key architectural decisions for large projects.

  • You have mentored junior developers.

  • You have worked on multiple engineering teams, both small and large.

THE TECH STACK YOU'LL USE

  • Meteor / Semantic UI / MongoDB

  • Microservice architecture / Docker / AWS

  • Local copy of full production stack for development

  • GitHub for version control and pull requests

ABOUT OUR ENGINEERING TEAM

  • Our engineering team demonstrates and values technical thought leadership.

  • Qualia hosts the official Meteor Developer’s Night in our San Francisco HQ, which is the largest gathering of Meteor developers in the world. The event features talks on Meteor and Javascript development generally, often including talks from Qualia team members.

  • Qualia’s Head of Design, Jack Lukic, is the creator of Semantic UI, one of the most popular open-source design frameworks. Qualia engineers learn this framework, and design patterns more generally, directly from the creator of the framework our front end is built on! Very few companies can say that.

  • As part of our focus on continual learning and development, a Qualia team member gives an educational talk on something they’re interested in every Thursday to the entire engineering and product team. Topics range from Kolmogorov complexity theory to the definition of art, to models of existential risk.

Senior FullStack Engineer

Alloy is where you belong!

What You Will Do

Alloy's product can be roughly divided into two sides—a Django/React web app and a Node.js API. We're looking for help maintaining and building out features for the former (and really the latter, too, but that's a different job, and if that sounds fun then you should talk to my colleague Jeff).

  • Design new features!

    • Talk to users, understand their requirements, and work with our full-time designer Rachelle to spec out beautiful new user experiences.
  • Build them!

    • Starting with the database design and finishing with the final UX and style touches, write good code that brings your features to life. Once they're tested, peer-reviewed, and QA'ed, they'll be deployed to our production environment.
  • Bugfixes!

    • What went wrong? How can we make sure it never happens again? We live for the root-cause analysis after getting things back up and running for our customers as soon as possible!
  • Support the team!

    • Keep the customer success crew in the loop for a feature timeline. Run a SQL query for operations to determine this month's billing amounts. Help out where you can!
  • You decide! It's a small team—the definition of the role is somewhat flexible and will grow to reflect your own strengths and interests!

What We Are Looking For

  • 3+ years real-world experience working as a software developer on code in production.

  • While we like to think of ourselves as "platform-agnostic" in our hiring process, we expect that someone in this role will be familiar with or willing to learn our existing stack:

    • Python 3, Django - Serves as the back end for our dashboards.

    • ES6 React - Most of our complex front end logic, compiled to browser-agnostic Javascript by Webpack and Babel.

    • SCSS, Bootstrap 4 - Compiled by Webpack and Babel.

    • PostgreSQL - Our main data store.

    • Elasticsearch - For quick full-text searching.

    • Git/Github - Version control

    • AWS infrastructure tools

    • Unix command line

  • Teamwork experience!

    • We're open to people whose experience is mainly on personal projects and/or contracting but we'd really like someone who has experience working with a team.
  • College degree in computer science is helpful, but not necessary
